Dr. Ramya Sampath

Board member

Dr. Ramya Sampath is a resident physician at Yale New Haven Hospital. She received her MD with Distinction in Research from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Her interest in palliative care was born from seeing her father suffer at the end of his life from complex medical conditions and uncontrolled pain in the US. This led her to commit to improving policy, advocacy, and care for patients in India and worldwide. She has been a member of the Pallium India team since 2017, when she pursued a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship at Pallium to study palliative care delivery and policy in Kerala based at Pallium India.

Her medical research has focused on improving palliative care and treatment for patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease. She has published extensively in medical and humanities forums advocating for equitable access to palliative care and pain relief worldwide. Her work has also focused on improving the experiences of patients and family caregivers in the process of making medical decisions.

Prior to her work in medicine, she served as an educational technology consultant for faculty at Columbia University and the American University in Cairo to improve innovation in higher education. She is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and is a recipient of the Jules Cohen Award for Advancing Medical Education and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.
